Travel Report: Building Community and New Partnerships in Anceu, Spain
Aamut alkavat hitaasti pienessä Anceun kylässä, jota ympäröi aavemaisten eukalyptuspuiden metsä. Sää on usvainen. Hevoset laiduntavat ja ponit seisovat paikoillaan. Olemme Espanjassa Galician itsehallintoalueella, missä tyypillinen kevätaamu ei välttämättä ole kovinkaan lämmin, mutta raikas ilma virkistää mäkisessä maastossa kulkijaa.
Mornings begin slowly in the small village of Anceu, surrounded by a ghost-like forest of eucalyptus trees. The weather is misty. Horses graze, and ponies stand still. We are in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain, where a typical spring morning is not necessarily very warm, but the fresh air revitalizes the traveler in the hilly terrain.
Osallistumme RAREn tiimin kanssa virolaisen Shokkin Groupin järjestämään Project Playground -hankkeen retriittiin huhtikuussa 2026. Siellä eri organisaatioiden projektivastaavat pääsevät luomaan uusia kumppanuuksia ja suunnittelemaan tulevaisuuden hankkeita liittyen epäviralliseen oppimiseen.
Shokkin Group on jäsenyyteen perustuva organisaatio, joka tarjoaa työkaluja ja mahdollisuuksia nuorille, nuorisojohtajille ja kouluttajille. Käytännössä Shokkin luo erilaisia pelejä, kuten pakopelejä, joita voidaan hyödyntää esimerkiksi kouluissa epävirallisen oppimisen tukena. Shokkin on toiminut vuodesta 2011 eteenpäin ja me RARElla käytiin tutustumassa Shokkinin toimintaan viime kesänä Tallinnassa.
With RARE’s team, we participate in the Project Playground retreat organized by the Estonian Shokkin Group in April 2026. There, project managers from various organizations can create new partnerships and plan future projects related to nonformal learning.
Shokkin Group is a membership-based organization that provides tools and opportunities for young people, youth leaders, and educators. In practice, Shokkin creates various games, such as escape games, which can be utilized, for example, in schools to support non-formal learning. Shokkin has been active since 2011, and we at RARE visited them in Tallinn last summer to learn more about their work.
Kourallinen nuorisotoimijoita on nyt kokoontunut tänne Pontevedran kaupungin kupeeseen. Shokkinin edustajat Pavel ja Olalla ottavat jokaisen sydämellisesti vastaan. Ensimmäinen päivä kuluu siivillä toisiimme tutustuen. Seuraavana päivänä syvennymme siihen, mitä kukin osallistujataho tekee työkseen. Kolmantena päivänä jakaudumme ryhmiin, hyppäämme tuntemattomaan ja alamme suunnitella uusia hankkeita tuoreiden kumppaneiden kanssa. Emme kuitenkaan pysy vieraina kauaa, vaan pääsemme nopeasti jyvälle siitä, mitä kukin voisi tarjota muille. Neljäntenä päivänä olemme jo valmiita esittelemään suunnittelemiamme projekteja ja yhteistyömuotoja.
Viikon ohjelma on hyvin suunniteltu ja riittävän väljä, jotta ehdimme tutustumaan muihin osallistujiin. Osallistujia on eri puolilta Eurooppaa, kuten Italiasta, Puolasta ja Sloveniasta, joten vitsailemme usein toisten maiden stereotypioista ja työtavoista. Nämä hetket ovat viikon tärkeimpiä, sillä niissä huomaamme, kenen välillä synkkaa ja on vaivatonta tehdä yhteistyötä. Yhteiset arvot ja tavoitteet ovat tärkeä lähtökohta uusille projekteille, mutta ihmisten välinen kemia on polttoainetta ja motivaattori aidosti toimivalle yhteistyölle. Yhteiset hetket paellan ja vermutin äärellä sinetöivät tahtotilan luoda jotain inspiroivaa ja uutta yhteisen hyvän eteen. Myös kävelyt Anceun metsissä tarjoavat arvokkaita tilaisuuksia syventyä keskusteluihin ja tutustua toistemme ajatuksiin.
A handful of youth workers have gathered here near the city of Pontevedra. Shokkin’s representatives, Pavel and Olalla, welcome everyone with warmth. The first day flies by as we get to know each other. The next day, we delve deeper into what each participating organization does. On the third day, we divide into groups, jump into the unknown, and start planning new projects with fresh new partners. However, we don’t remain strangers for long; we quickly grasp what each person and organisation could offer others. By the fourth day, we are ready to present the projects and forms of cooperation we have designed.
The week’s program is well-planned and sufficiently flexible to allow us to genuinely form connections with the other participants. They are from different parts of Europe, like from Italy, Poland and Slovenia, so we often joke about each other’s stereotypes and work-ing methods. These moments are the most important of the week, as they help us notice with whom we click with and who are easy to collaborate with. Shared values and goals are an important starting point, but the chemistry between project leaders is the fuel and motivator for genuinely functional collaboration. Shared moments over paella and vermouth seal the will to create something inspiring and new together for the common good. Walks in the forests of Anceu also provide valuable opportunities to delve into discussions and get to know each other’s thoughts.
Retriitti järjestettiin Rural Hackers -yhteisön perustamassa Anceu Coliving -asuntolassa. Se on luotu elvyttämään Galician maaseutua ja tukemaan ekologista sekä yhteisöllistä asumista ja työskentelyä. Pääsemme valmistamaan ruokaa, siivoamaan tiloja ja jakamaan arkea asukkaiden tavoin. Osallistujien joukossa on myös Anceu Colivingin pysyvä asukas, joka opastaa meitä paikallisille tavoille ja kertoo kylästä sen asukkaineen. Elämä kylässä on hidasta mutta vireää ja kaikki vaikuttavat tuntevan toisensa. Pienestä kylästä puuttuu baari, mutta Anceu Coliving tarjoaa jatkuvasti uusia kohtaamisia, joten yhteisön sosiaalinen puoli on kunnossa.
Suurimmat opit RAREn tiimille olivat muiden ihmisten toimintatavat, projektinhallinta ja kansainvälisen retriitin järjestäminen. Huomasimme myös, kuinka mittaamattoman tärkeitä tällaiset tapahtumat ovat. Mahdollisuuksia joissa uusiin kumppaneihin voisi tutustua näin syvällisesti, ei ole liikaa tarjolla. Shokkinin tekemä työ retriitin eteen on todella merkityksellistä.
Viikko kului siivillä, ja tuntui haikealta hyvästellä uudet ystävät. Seuraavat online-tapaamiset on kuitenkin jo sovittuina, ja toive uusista hienoista projekteista elää vahvana rinnassamme.
The retreat was held at the Anceu Coliving residence, established by the Rural Hackers community. It was created to revitalize the Galician countryside and support communal and ecological living and working. We get to prepare food, clean the premises, and share daily life like the residents. Among the participants is also a permanent resident of Anceu Coliving, who guides us on local customs and tells us about the village and its inhabitants. Life in the village is slow but vibrant, and everyone seems to know each other. Although the village lacks a bar, Anceu Coliving constantly offers new encounters, so the social aspect of this community is well taken care of.
The biggest takeaways for RARE’s team were the working methods of other participants,
project management, and how to organize an international retreat. We also noticed how immensely important these events are. Opportunities to get to know new partners in such depth are not too frequently available. Shokkin’s work for the retreat is truly significant.
The week flew by, and it felt wistful to say goodbye to our new friends. However, the next online meetings are already scheduled, and the hope for wonderful new projects with our new partners lives strongly within us.
